Music Group- What are we Discussing?
Author:
Welcome to the blog of the #Comm 326 Music Group! Our group decided that instead of observing the entire music industry, choosing one, popular genre and observing it under three different contexts studied in Pop Culture Theory class would allow us to provide greater detail and amplify how theoretical concepts can be applied.
Therefore, we decided to look analyze the genre of hip-hop and rap. In addition, we chose to observe this genre under the Feminist, Political Economy, and Critical Race perspectives. The hip-hop and rap industry are huge in American, contemporary culture. While the genre is meant to target a niche text, listeners of this genre span many cultures and demographics.
If you take a step back from what you see rap and hip-hop as today, and consider its theoretical roots, there is great value in observing its manifestations in the realm of popular music and popular culture as a whole. Rap and Hip-Hop have changed the industry dramatically and provided a glimpse into understandings of race, class, feminist theory and media prowess.
Through the blogs represented on this site, it’s our group’s hope that you would come to a realization of the impact that the Rap & Hip-Hop genre has had on the music industry and American culture in general.
